The Phantom of the Opera releases amateur rights

The Phantom of the Opera, one of the world’s most enduring contemporary contemporary musicals with 25 years on stage, productions in multiple languages and a sequel, the blockbuster hit Love Never Dies, is extending its reach.

Performance rights will become available to amateur theatre groups in Australia and New Zealand from 2013.

“It is a momentous occasion for many who are so in love with The Phantom of the Opera to now be able to perform it in their communities, for their families, friends and local audiences” said Tim McFarlane, Managing Director of the Really Useful Company Asia Pacific.

“I am very much looking forward to seeing this masterpiece reinterpreted.”

Based on the novel Le Fantôme de ‘l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s adaptation of the story of a masked mysterious man who lurks in the catacombs of the Paris Opera House and the young soprano he loves is widely known as the most commercially successful stage musical ever.

Kim Ransley, Managing Director of ORiGiN Theatrical, said “We are thrilled to be able to icense the world wide premiere amateur society production of The Phantom of the Opera. This is a great opportunity for community theatre companies to produce a once in a lifetime magical experience for their members and local audiences.”

Soon that Music of the Night will be available for a whole new audience. Which theatrical group would you like to see take on the Phantom?
