STC’s Uncle Vanya nominated for five Helen Hayes Awards

Sydney Theatre Company’s Uncle Vanya has been nominated for five Helen Hayes Awards, a prestigous cultural awards institution in the United States that recognises artistic achievement on stage in the Washington area.

STC received five nominations across the four categories applicable to non-resident (i.e. touring) productions: Outstanding Production; Outstanding Lead Actor (Richard Roxburgh); Outstanding Lead Actress (Cate Blanchett); and Outstanding Supporting Performer (Hayley McElhinney and Hugo Weaving).

This production of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, adapted by Andrew Upton and directed by Tamas Ascher, debuted in Sydney in November 2010 to critical acclaim. The entire Sydney cast will again reprise their roles for the Lincoln Center Festival in New York. Performances will run from 19 to 28 July 2012.

Sydney Theatre Company has already been honoured with three Helen Hayes Awards for its production of A Streetcar Named Desire which toured to the United States in 2009, winning Outstanding Non-Resident Production, Outstanding Lead Actress (Cate Blanchett) and Outstanding Supporting Performer (Robin McLeavy).
