Arts Centre Melbourne Creative Producer Families and Children Katy Warner said she was excited for families to visit and enjoy this diverse curation of family works.

Warner:

We are thrilled to present such a fun, interactive and engaging program providing the young and young at heart with opportunities to experience the latest in children’s music, awe-inspiring acrobatics by talented young circus performers, epic dinosaur puppetry and a free, interactive music making installation with real plants!.

The performing arts can bring such wonder to children, while sparking curiosity, imagination and creativity. These events are bound to make a lasting impression on children, and their grown-ups, for a long time. To ensure our program is accessible, we have worked to keep our tickets prices reasonable and included free activities so everyone can enjoy summer at Arts Centre Melbourne.

The 2024 summer season begins with Erth Visual & Physical Inc’s fan-favourite Prehistoric World at the Fairfax Studio from 3 – 10 January. This incredibly visual show of theatrical puppetry offers audiences a time-bending trip into vast oceans and ancient valleys to see amazing dinosaurs come alive.

Following each performance audiences can get up close and personal in a dinosaur petting zoo activation in the Fairfax foyer as part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s 2024 Families Activation program.

Much loved Playschool host Zindzi Okenyo is joined by a cast of fluffy friends with Zindzi & The Zillionaires on January 14 for a musical adventure. This show at the Fairfax Studio will have heads bopping through a family friendly set of RnB, Hip Hop and Rap.

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus troupe returns to Arts Centre Melbourne for Tempo at the Fairfax Studio from 17 – 20 January. Directed by Jake Silvestro with an original score by Ania Reynolds, Tempo features an extraordinary ensemble of young performers aged 12 – 18 years who will flip, juggle, balance and dive to symphonic soundtrack.

Families also have an opportunity to create floral compositions in The Plants musical installation on the Theatres Forecourt from 16 – 21 January. Participants and their parents are invited to make music with a marigold, compose with a chrysanthemum and lean in, listening to lavender. The Plants are experimental musical instruments combining organic matter and bespoke digital sensors inviting everyone to play and create new compositions.

There will also be a Musical Plants Workshop as part of the PLAY program on 18 & 20 January at The Channel to explore and learn the technology used to create The Plants. Participants will run through music making and composition to star in their own performance activation.

Plants by Playable Streets, Tempo and the 2024 Families Activation program have been generously supported by Dr John Leaper OAM and Mrs Jenny Leaper OAM.

The summer season is presented as part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s year-round Families and Children Program.
