Perth’s August Action

As winter draws to a close, Perth Theatres begin to warm up with the world’s longest running play, the tale of a little red headed orphan, an absurd comedy and productions from one of the world’s best dramatic schools, WAAPA.

The Mousetrap

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, The Mousetrap, arrives in Perth this month. Christie’s classic opened on London’s West End in November 1952 and continues to play to audiences at London’s St. Martin’s Theatre, making it the longest running show in the world! In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee this all-Australian production is one of 60 professional productions that have been licensed worldwide. The Mousetrap is a murder mystery that will have you guessing “whodunit?” to the very end.

The Cat In The Box

Cat in the box

Opening season two for the Blue Room Theatre, The Cat in the Box, takes a comic look at what happens when an artist, a scientist and a hippy are locked in a room with a cockroach and a pile of rubbish. Described as an absurd comedy the play is written by award winning local playwright, Vivienne Glance.

The timeless tale of the little orphan, with the red hair, is back to entertain a new generation. Staring Todd McKenny as Rooster, Nancye Hayes as Miss Hannigan, Michael Cormick as Daddy Warbucks and Bert Newton as Frankin D. Roosevelt, Annie will play a limited 5 week season. The score is full of memorable tunes including ‘It’s a Hard Knock Life’, ‘Easy Sreet’, ‘N.Y.C’ and the optimistic, ‘Tomorrow’.

Into the Woods

Be careful what you wish for. Inspired by the fairy tales of the Brothers Grim, this Tony Award winning magical musical is written by the American Musical Master, Stephen Sondheim. The musical explores what happens after “happily ever after” as a baker and his wife journey into the woods on a quest to break a spell cast by a witch.  Along the way they cross paths with an assortment of fairy tale characters including Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Cinderella. The score includes such gems as ‘Children will Listen, ‘Giants in the Sky’ and ‘No One Is Alone’.

The Crucible

A thrilling and chilling portrayal of how religious fundamentalism can take hold of a society and destroy the lives of the innocent. Set in Salem, a small village in Massachusetts, in 1692, petty rivalry and mistrust turn neighbour against neighbour, friend against friend and even child against child. In the courtroom common sense it thrown out and replaced by fear and vengeance.
