So here is a summary of the known ‘openings and closings’ of major musicals in Australia for the next few months.

 

  • As reported last week exclusively on AussieTheatre.com, Love Never Dies will close in Melbourne on December 18 2011 ahead of a Sydney opening in January 2012 at the Capitol Theatre. Dates yet to be confirmed
  • Mary Poppins, the current show at the Capitol, will close on 17 December 2011 before heading to Brisbane to begin previews at QPAC Lyric Theatre from December 27 2011

  • Rock Of Ages will open in Brisbane on 12 November 2011 for a limited season, before transferring to Sydney for an opening night on January 14 2012.

  • Annie, starring Anthony Warlow, Nancye Hayes, Todd McKenney and Chloe Dallimore will open at the Lyric Theatre Sydney on December 29, 2011. It will open in Brisbane at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC on April 7 2012

  • Jersey Boys are still selling tickets until November 6 2011 at the Theatre Royal Sydney. They are scheduled to transfer across the Pacific to The Civic Theatre in Auckland, New Zealand from April 2012.
  • The Threepenny Opera will open at the Sydney Theatre Company on September 3 2011 – this is a 2010 Malthouse Melbourne and Victorian Opera production which has transferred to the STC (Starring Eddie Perfect, Paul Capsis and Lucy Maunder)
  • Wicked will be closing in Perth on September 11, 2011 wrapping up more than 3 years of performances in Australia. The show will then transfer to Singapore on the first leg of what is believed to be a year-long Asian tour.
  • Hairspray, currently playing at the Lyric Theatre Sydney, will be ending its Australian tour on October 9 2011 and management are considering the option of an international tour.
  • It will be followed at the Lyric by Kevin Spacey’s Richard III which is opening at the Lyric on December 1 2011.
  • Strange Bedfellows will open at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne on October 19 2011 for a limited season.
  • Opera Australia’s South Pacific starring Teddy Tahu Rhodes will open at the Sydney Opera House in from 11 August 2012.
