Cry-Baby the musical replaces American Psycho at the Hayes Theatre

It was announced today that the musical adaption of the 1990, John Waters, cult classic movie Cry-Baby will have its Australian premiere at the Hayes Theatre Co from July this year.

Cry-Baby replaces the previously announced production of American Psycho which was scheduled to appear at the Hayes in this slot, but was cancelled in the last month.

The production will be directed by Alexander Berlage, choreographed by Cameron Mitchell. Isabel Hudson (set design), Mason Browne (costume design) and Veronique Bennett (associate lighting design) rounding out the currently announced creative team.

Set in 1954 Baltimore the book of the musical has been adapted from the film by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan who also adapted Waters’ film Hairspray for the stage. The story focuses on teenager Allison Vernon-Williams, who is drawn across the tracks to orphaned bad boy Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker, the leader of a pack of rebel outcasts.

Director, Alexander Berlage says of the show, “We are thrilled to be presenting the Australian Premiere of the musical adaption of “King of Trash” John Waters’ subversive cult classic romp Cry-Baby. Cry-Baby is a grotesque mirror held up to the world, a rip-roaring provocative satirical comedy about paranoia, bigotry and the irrational fear of ‘the other’ in a 1950’s post-war Baltimore. Waters captures 1950’s America then parodies and transcends the period to create a piece with themes and ideas which ring just as relevant to us today.”

Cry-Baby will open at the Hayes Theatre Co from 20 July, with tickets on sale from tomorrow. More details available at Hayestheatre.com.au
