BlakDance Interactive event opening the cultural and theatrical minds of many

Blak Dance 2012

Born from an Ausdance National program called Treading the Pathways, BlakDance Australia Limited’s purpose has always been to support Indigenous Australian dance and dancers.

The Billie Brown Studio at the Queensland Theatre Company was a hive of activity earlier this month as BlakDance Australia presented a cultural artists symposium to share choreographic experiences and knowledge on a Global scale in Brisbane.

First Nation Artists also attended the symposium to engage in the discussions where topics such as navigating cultural protocol in the performance creation process for First Nation choreographers were addressed.

Held at Queensland Theatre Company in Brisbane as part of the GreenHouse program, the symposium marked the beginning of the BlakDance performance season for 2012 in which their newest works were showcased by International and Australian First Nation Choreographers.

The Australian independent choreographers featured Rita Pryce (BAIWA DANCE CO), Jacob Boehme (IDJA DANCE THEATRE) and Tammi Gissell (FIGURES OF SPEECH) whilst the international choreographers include Ojeya Cruz Banks of Guåhan/Guam and African American heritage and Jack Gray and Cathy Livermore (ATAMIRA DANCE COLLECTIVE) who hail from New Zealand.

BlakDance 2012 was a wonderful opportunity to see traditional dance meeting contemporary performance with vivid storytelling from many different global and cultural voices.
