Sydney Dance Company's The Land Of Yes and The Land Of No

Sydney Dance Company reported an operating surplus of over $500,000 for their 2011 season this week, making last year their most successful season in many, many years.

Artistic Innovation, Audience Development and Financial Growth were the three main goals set by the SDC for 2011, and it seems the focus on these three elements proved a successful formula.

A 47% increase in paid audiences across the year combined with highly successful domestic and international tours, growth in sponsorship and careful cost management provided the company with a dream year, says SDC Chairman Julian Knights.

“The activities of Sydney Dance Company across 2011 were geared towards achieving the three stated goals of our business plan. In 2011 Sydney Dance Company performed to a combined audience of over 50,000 people, which is huge for a contemporary dance organisation”, said Knights.

“In the area of financial growth, the company is delighted to have achieved an operating surplus of $506,612. Artistically, 2011 saw Sydney Dance Company commission and present two world premieres as well as significant national and international touring”.

Sydney Dance Company Executive Director, Anne Dunn is pleased with the results and believes both sponsorship and fundraising helped with the success of 2011. The popular annual fundraising party, Dance Noir, will be taking place again this year on 7th September.

“Looking ahead, the company is enjoying a period of growth and stability following the announcement of Rafael Bonachela’s contract extension in 2011. Sydney Dance Company is also delighted to welcome two new Directors to the Board this year – Karen Moses, the Executive Director Finance and Strategy for Origin Energy, and Judy Crawford, a philanthropist who has extensive experience in the not for profit sector,” Ms Dunn said.
