Patti LuPone to Make Broadway Return with Mia Farrow in The Roommate

Three-time Tony Award winner Patti LuPone is set to make a notable return to Broadway this fall, starring alongside actress Mia Farrow in Jen Silverman’s new play, The Roommate. Directed by Jack O’Brien, the production is slated to open at the Booth Theatre with performances beginning in late August.

LuPone, who left the Actors’ Equity Association in July 2022, remains a celebrated figure in theater despite her departure from the union. At the time of her resignation, she expressed that her run in the Tony-winning revival of Company might mark her last stage appearance for a while. This new role marks her comeback to the Broadway stage, challenging the usual requirement for Actors’ Equity membership which is typical for Broadway performers.

Sources close to the production indicate that there will be a “right to work” argument leveraged for LuPone, emphasizing that Equity membership is not a strict necessity for theatrical participation in New York, which does not have right-to-work laws.

LuPone’s Broadway history is distinguished with her last performance being in Company in 2022, for which she earned a Tony for Featured Actress. Her illustrious career includes previous Tony wins for Gypsy and Evita. Mia Farrow, set to co-star, is equally accomplished but known more for her extensive film work including Rosemary’s Baby and The Purple Rose of Cairo. Her last appearance on Broadway was in the 2015 revival of Love Letters.

This pairing of LuPone and Farrow in The Roommate promises to be a compelling addition to the Broadway season, drawing on the formidable talents of both actresses.
