Ogunquit Playhouse Announces Premiere of ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Musical in 2024 Season
The Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine is set to enrich its 92nd season with the world premiere of a new musical adaptation of the beloved 1997 TriStar Pictures’ romantic comedy, ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding.’ This much-anticipated production is slated to grace the stage from September 26 through October 27, marking the grand finale of a season featuring five exquisite musicals.
The original film, renowned for its heartwarming narrative and stellar cast including Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, and Cameron Diaz, narrates the tale of Julianne Potter, a spirited food critic, who embarks on a mission to rekindle romance with her former beau, Michael O’Neal, upon learning of his impending nuptials to the charming and youthful Kimmy.
Elevating the stage rendition of this classic story, the musical will boast a book co-written by the film’s original screenwriter, Ron Bass, and acclaimed English playwright Jonathan Harvey. The production is set to resonate with audiences through the timeless melodies of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Iconic numbers such as “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and other classics like “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Walk on By,” and “What’s New Pussycat?” will bring the narrative to life in a new, melodious form.
The 2024 season at the Ogunquit Playhouse promises a diverse lineup, starting with ‘Waitress’ (May 9 through June 8), followed by ‘Crazy for You’ (June 13 through July 13), ‘A Little Night Music’ (July 18 through August 17), and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ (August 22 through September 21). While the casting for the season remains under wraps, anticipation builds for what is expected to be a showcase of stellar talent and unforgettable performances.
