Christopher Jackson to Return to HAMILTON as George Washington

Christopher Jackson is heading back to the room where it happened.

The original HAMILTON cast member will return to Broadway later this year to reprise his Tony nominated performance as George Washington, bringing one of the musical’s defining original performances back to the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Jackson will begin his limited engagement on 8 September 2026 and is scheduled to remain with the production through 3 January 2027. His return marks another major original cast homecoming for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s landmark musical, following Leslie Odom Jr.’s recent Broadway return as Aaron Burr.

Jackson originated the role of George Washington in HAMILTON, playing opposite Miranda’s Alexander Hamilton during the show’s meteoric rise from theatrical phenomenon to global cultural force. His performance earned him a Tony Award nomination and became one of the central pillars of the original Broadway company.

As Washington, Jackson gave the musical its sense of authority, gravity and restraint. While HAMILTON is driven by revolutionary ambition, political rivalry and restless momentum, Washington often stands as the production’s moral and strategic centre. His songs, including Right Hand Man, History Has Its Eyes on You and One Last Time, are among the musical’s most enduring moments.

The return also carries emotional weight for Jackson, whose connection to the show extends beyond a celebrated role. HAMILTON was a career defining project for many of its original cast members, helping reshape the Broadway landscape and bringing a new generation of audiences to musical theatre.

Jackson’s decision to revisit the role comes after the musical marked its 10th anniversary, a milestone that brought members of the original company back together and renewed attention on the production’s legacy. For Jackson, the timing appears to have offered the right opportunity to reconnect with a show that helped define his artistic life.

His comeback follows a successful precedent. When Leslie Odom Jr. returned to the role of Aaron Burr, the production saw a major box office surge, once again demonstrating the power of the original cast in the eyes of HAMILTON fans. Jackson’s return is likely to create similar excitement among audiences eager to experience a key member of the original Broadway company back on stage.

Since leaving HAMILTON, Jackson has continued to work across theatre, television, film and music. His stage credits include IN THE HEIGHTS, THE LION KING and HELL’S KITCHEN, while his screen work has included roles in television dramas and voice work connected to major animated projects. He has also remained closely linked to Miranda’s creative world, having collaborated with him across several projects.

HAMILTON opened on Broadway in 2015 and quickly became one of the most influential musicals of the 21st century. Blending hip hop, R&B, pop, traditional musical theatre and American history, the show transformed the story of Alexander Hamilton into a genre shifting stage event. It went on to win 11 Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Grammy Award for its original cast recording.

The musical remains a major Broadway draw more than a decade after its debut. Its continued success has been supported by touring productions, international stagings, a filmed version featuring the original cast and ongoing audience interest in the show’s music, politics and performances.

Jackson’s return gives the Broadway production another moment of renewed attention. For long time fans, it is a rare chance to see one of the performers who helped create HAMILTON’s original identity step back into a role he helped define. For newer audiences, it offers an opportunity to experience a piece of the show’s history live.

The limited engagement is expected to be one of the most anticipated Broadway casting events of the season. In a show built around legacy, memory and the stories history chooses to preserve, Jackson’s return as George Washington feels especially fitting.
