A Music Theatre Fanboy’s Top 8 Youtube Interviews

Earlier this year, I created A Music Theatre Fanboy’s Top 10 Youtube Performances. This week I thought I’d once again have my coffee at my computer desk, and show you some* of my favourite MT performers being interviewed on some of my favourite Youtube channels.*

Not only are all of these actors spectacularly talented, but they all seem like such genuine, warm and hilarious human beings, which I think is best brought out in these interviews. (I also don’t think its a coincidence that they’re so lovely, and have had such successful careers)

*Hopefully you don’t feel upset that I’ve only listed 8 this time. These videos are much longer, and I’m very aware that people probably don’t have time to watch 10 sets of 15-minutes interviews!

1. Kelli O’Hara on Side by Side by Susan Blackwell

You get to watch her sing improvised theme songs, make chilli in her kitchen, and talk about the time she had sex in her dressing room. What’s not to love about this segment, and this perfect woman?

2. Laura Benanti and Zachary Levi on Ask a Star

If you haven’t seen the filming of Roundabout Theatre Company’s She Loves Me, please go and watch it as soon as humanly possible. And as soon as you’re done, watch this interview between these two incredible performers, and see that they have just as much chemistry offstage as on.

3. Annaleigh Ashford on Role Call

I think Role Call, where actors answer questions about their career through their ‘post-it note CV’, is a really interesting, new take on MT interviews. There are many great ones being released at the moment, with Annaleigh Ashford’s being particularly hilarious.

4. Jessie Mueller on ‘Natural Woman: Backstage at Beautiful

This whole backstage vlog is certainly worth watching, not only because I believe she is one of the most talented performers of this generation, but because you really get to see her quirky, genuine and incredibly endearing personality. This particular episode features Jessie dramatically singing along to Sunday in the Park with George as she applies her makeup, which I bet you never thought you needed until now.

5. Liz Callaway on Seth Rudetsky’s Obsessed

‘Obsessed’ is a very fitting title for how I feel about Liz Callaway. While she is the loveliest woman in the world, I also like that this video shows a little bit of her sass. And you get to hear her sing ‘The Story Goes On’!

6. Sierra Boggess on Ask a Star

You get to see Sierra’s funny, loveable charm come through in this interview. But more importantly, you get to see her speak about her mantra of self love and worth, and how she manages to maintain her incredible optimism throughout everything she does.

8. Steven Pasquale on Show People with Paul Wontorek

If you ever have time to do a Show People binge, I highly recommend it. They’re funny, interesting and often incredibly insightful about the actor’s process and wisdom. This one is here because I just really love Steven Pasquale.

Joel Granger

Born in the land of sheep and hobbits, Joel Granger moved to Australia to study at WAAPA's Music Theatre course, class of 2015. Currently playing the role of Elder McKinley in the Australian tour of 'The Book of Mormon' tour, his other stage and screen credits include 'She Loves Me', 'Brigadoon', 'Sweeney Todd', 'Please Like Me' and 'True Story with Hamish & Andy.' He would like to say he enjoys long walks on the beach, but his ginger hair and freckled skin means he actually avoids sunshine as much as possible. Follow Joel on instagram at: @joelgranger_
