Jon Jackson – What The World Needs Now Venue: Downstairs at Alma’s, Melbourne Friday 23 September, 2011 Jon JacksonInside the fabulous new Melbourne venue, Downstairs at Alma’s, I felt as though I was sitting in a cabaret lounge in Paris in the 1950s. Just as I was about to settle into the comfort of my Moulin Rouge fantasy, suddenly I could hear the exquisite tones of Petula Clark singing one of my favourite songs ‘Downtown.’ And so began the incredible journey of an intimate night with Jon Jackson. Jackson is not only an extraordinary vocalist, hailing from his days with the Great Big Opera Company, but his prelude into stand-up comedy has the makings of a new show. From Rogers & Hammerstein to Noel Coward, to Johnny Cash and The Eurythmics, Jackson will dazzle you with his sultry tones and take you on a hilarious ride down memory lane. Along the way you will discover his humble beginnings in a small Queensland RSL club and witness his meteoric rise to the international stage, with a splash of Greek dancing thrown in for good measure. While some may be put off by the invitation to sing along to some classic hits, there is no compulsory audience participation, and as a result the entire house could be seen singing and swaying to an alternative version of ‘Day By Day.’ Aside from a dramatic request for water on account of the smoke machine (frankly this punter believes smoke machines should be banned along with cigarettes) this show was as smooth as the sounds emanating from Jackson’s incredible repertoire. With Shannon Whitelock on piano and back-up vocals, Jon Jackson provides a night out to remember. What The World Needs Now is an evening with this extraordinary performer.  Don’t miss Jon Jackson. 2 nights only on September 30 and October 1. Downstairs at Alma’s, Melbourne. Bookings through Moshtix at www.moshtix.com.au or 1300 438 849 Visit www.downstairsatalmas.com for more details
