Welcome to an exclusive behind-the-scenes treat from the Sydney media call of WICKED Australia 2023! Our social media guru Josh got an exclusive sneak peek into the magical world of WICKED at Sydney Lyric Theatre, before its official opening night!

Sydney’s very own Emerald City is alive with the sounds of one of Broadway’s most iconic musicals – WICKED. As the green wave sweeps the precinct around the Sydney Lyric Theatre, we were granted exclusive access to a media call, offering a tantalising glimpse behind the emerald curtain.

The Magic of Musical Numbers

During our behind-the-scenes exploration, we were treated to three captivating musical performances that form the backbone of this enthralling production: ‘The Wizard and I’, ‘Popular’, and ‘One Short Day’.

Courtney Monsma, playing the bubbly Glinda, dazzled the room with her rendition of ‘Popular’, exemplifying the charm and charisma of the beloved character. Sheridan Adams, embodying the complex character of Elphaba, delivered an impassioned performance of ‘The Wizard and I’. The ensemble cast, in their vibrant costumes, took the stage for ‘One Short Day’, transporting us straight to the heart of the Emerald City.

The precinct’s transformation into a verdant haven is not just for aesthetics. It’s a testament to the enormous excitement and anticipation surrounding WICKED’s Australian stint. As previously shared, due to the overwhelming demand, a fresh batch of tickets is slated to hit the market soon.

John Frost, the WICKED Australia Co-producer, had earlier voiced his excitement, saying the show’s arrival in Sydney dovetails beautifully with its 20th Broadway anniversary. “This is one of the most lavish musical productions to have ever played in Australia, the full Broadway experience,” Frost had remarked. This media call provided us with a firsthand experience of that grandeur.

With nearly two decades since its Broadway premiere, WICKED’s status as a cultural phenomenon remains unchallenged. Its rich history of awards, including the Grammy, Olivier, Tony®, and Drama Desk awards, speaks volumes of its global acclaim. Our sneak peek showcased the reasons for such accolades: the top-tier production quality, the emotional depth of the characters, and, of course, the unforgettable music.

The Wizard and I is sung by Sheridan Adams (Elphaba), the future Wicked Witch of the West, the song expresses her excitement and anticipation at the prospect of meeting the Wizard of Oz. Elphaba believes that meeting the Wizard will allow her to finally be accepted by society, despite her green skin, and possibly even change her fate. The song reflects her hopes and dreams of a better future, where she’s celebrated and not ostracized for being different. It embodies her longing for recognition, acceptance, and her desire to use her powers for the greater good.

As WICKED prepares to captivate audiences in Sydney, the show promises to be a visual and auditory feast. Minister John Graham’s sentiments, as he awaits “a bit of Broadway here in Sydney,” resonate with many awaiting this production.

With its intricate storyline, exploring the lives of two women in Oz before Dorothy’s arrival, and its exploration of societal perceptions, WICKED is bound to continue its legacy of enchantment. Whether you’re revisiting or witnessing the magic for the first time, the world of WICKED promises to be “A Complete Triumph,” just as USA Today proclaimed.
