Top 5 Shows of 2011 – AussieTheatre.com’s reviewer’s choice, VIC

Top 5 Shows from Anne-Marie Peard

(Melbourne Review Co-ordinator)

I’ve seen over 100 shows this year and reviewed most of them. Reviewing is never more than opinion and it would be a very dull theatre world if we all liked the same shows and if theatre were created just to please. So please keep reading reviewers from all sites and publications, but never accept a writer’s opinion. Get out there and see as much live art as you can and make up your own mind about what you like.

There are way more than five shows that I loved in 2011, but here are my top five (and a bonus company) that were created in Melbourne.

Each challenged their own genre, was unafraid to take risks, told their stories in original ways and reached the hearts of their audiences. These were shows that I would see again and there was never a moment in the theatre when I wished to be anywhere else.

Ganesh Versus the Third Reich

Save for Crying

Flowerchildren

Sweet Child of Mine

Miles O’Neil’s World Around Us II

And my favourite company for 2011 is MKA . I couldn’t choose their best show of the year, but their most recent was The Economist.

Anne-Marie’s complete list of favourites for 2011 is at her own personal blog: sometimesmelbourne
