The musician, composer, songwriter, actor, comedian and writer is the first Australian to receive a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score, which he earned for his musical Matilda in 2013.

He has won many awards in his multi-hyphenate career, including Best Newcomer at the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and London Newcomer of the Year 2012.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer, Sandra Chipchase, who officiated the plaque unveiling said “Today we honour Tim Minchin, a very talented artist, who has not only contributed to the cultural fabric of our State and our nation, but whose work has also received international acclaim.”

“It’s fitting that Tim Minchin joins the likes of Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, John Bell AO OBE and Jacki Weaver, who are among the 21 legends of Australian stage and screen whose achievements have been recognised through individual plaques set into the paving stone around Walsh Bay,” she said at the ceremony, which was attended by Minchin’s parents.

The walk is a feature of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct at Pier 2/3, right by the homes of some of our most prestigious arts institutions: Sydney Theatre Company, Sydney Dance Company, Australian Theatre for Young People, and Bangarra Dance Theatre.

Last year, Tim Minchin performed in the Precinct in Sydney Theatre Company’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. (Read our review of the play here).
