It’s official – the King is coming back to Sydney.

A return season of Disney’s blockbuster musical The Lion King was announced today by the NSW Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts – George Souris.

In the Captiol Theatre Studio, Souris was joined by President of Disney Theatrical Group Thomas Schumacher to announce the revival of the musical, which has been seen to date by 63 million people world wide.

The Lion King closed at the Captiol Theatre in June 2005, and will “come home” to Capitol stage from December 2013, for an anticipated 8 month season.

While Schumacher and Souris didn’t rule out the possibility of an Australian tour they did stress that no plans had been made at this point beyond Sydney.

“It is logical that we can go to other cities”, said Schumacher, live from Times Square, NYC via satellite, “but the plan is not fixed yet”.

Casting will commence further down the track, but Shumacher did suggest that the show would feature “an Australian cast peppered with international artists”, citing performers of both South African and Maori heritage as possibilities.

More information and video to come.

  • See how long this musical last in Sydney THIS TIME? Remember the disaster of the so called blockbusters like HAIRSPRAY, DR ZHIVAGO, just to name a few? Heard through the grapevine that the advance bookings for the new musical AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN is very slow.

  • no plans beyond Sydney  it had better come to Melbourne as Ron Biver said other hot musicals have been disasters in Sydney so guess what happens lion king lands in Sydney doesn't do as well as Disney would like and leaves Australia and Melbourne where Musicals are successfulmisses out. Please Bring The Lion King to Melbourne Please

    • Actually Shannon. The Lion King did go to Melbourne but only lasted a year, after spending over two years in Sydney, The facilities in Melbourne at the time weren't equipped to hold the stage dimensions that the Lion King requires (Pit under stage, ability for stage to be risen up etc).
I agree though, take it everywhere possible. But don't destroy the show simply to tour futher. I saw it both in Sydney and New York, and toured backstage with the theatre directors. Sydney quality was surprisingly better than New York's! Yay for Australia :)

  • OMG COME TO MELBOURNE PLEASE SO MANY PEOPLE MISSED OUT LAST TIME AND WOULD LOVE ANOTHER CHANGE TO SEE THIS!

  • I agree...PLEASE come to Brisbane. Shows that have come here appear to have done well, so well that good tickets are EXTREMELY hard to come by. PLEASE come to Brisbane!!!!

  • Please come to Melbourne. We took our three children, and the eldest who has special needs was enthralled. She loves the Lion King. We are on to the 2nd DVD, the video is stretched beyond use. Thank goodness we have it now on the IPAD for her to watch.
