The Australian Voices bring the Moon to City Recital Hall

The world renowned a cappella group The Australian Voices is bringing their new choral-theatre experience to Sydney’s City Recital Hall on 16th May.

The Australian Voices

Moon by the Australian voices features a 20-strong choir with some serious pedigree. They have performed more than 600 concerts of new Australian music to over 250,000 audience members in more than 20 countries, under the direction of conductor and Artistic Director Gordon Hamilton.

The choir has previously recorded on the Warner Classics label and has produced some YouTube sensations with over 1.5 million views.

Gordon Hamilton said, “I’m incredibly excited. These singers are the best I’ve ever worked with and the sound is really stunning.

“Our repertoire for this concert is very diverse. We will perform William Barton’s Kalkadunga Yurdu with its earthy and hypnotic didgeridoo rhythms, Lisa Young’s Other Plans with its intoxicating blend of konnakol and scat, two movements from Rachmaninov’s beautiful All Night Vigil and of course, Moon.”

The performance will also feature classical choral works by Bruckner and Beibl and contemporary Australian works by Gordon Hamilton and Nigel Butterley, followed by Moon.

Moon is a feast for the senses – this unique multidimensional piece features superb vocals harmonies, vibrant movement and a breathtaking range of visual effects.

“The movement in Moon is quite adventurous for a choral piece. We have tried to challenge the stereotypes of choral singing and we are not a static choir. Conducting gestures are integrated with physical theatre, and perhaps the coolest thing is – at one point the conductor conducts upside down”, Hamilton told AussieTheatre.

Anne-Marie Heath, General Manager of City Recital Hall Angel Place, said, “The Australian Voices feature some spectacular voices.

“Under Gordon’s direction the choristers aged 17 to 35 from all over Australia produce these wonderful harmonies that move and excite. Our audience can expect a wonderful choral-theatre experience like no other!”

Moon by The Australian Voices is part of a national tour that commences at City Recital Hall Angel Place on Thursday 16 May, with tour dates throughout New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia.
