This week, the cast and crew of Love Never Dies opened their rehearsal room to the media for a sneak peek of the show and some of the amazing costumes. AussieTheatre.com was there to take in the spectacle, and speak to the team.

The musical had its premiere at London’s Adelphi Theatre in 2010, but this production of Love Never Dies, opening in Melbourne next month, is a completely new production.

Simon Phillips, Director of Love Never Dies says “It’s an honour to be working on an Australian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s dazzling new work. The score of Love Never Dies is truly ravishing, loaded with big, lyrical ballads and some taut and unforgettably hummable ensemble pieces.”

Presented at the media viewing were two numbers from the show – “Dear Old Friend” a quartet sung by principal characters Christine Daae (Anna O’Byrne), Raoul (Simon Gleeson), Meg Giry (Sharon Millerchip) and Madame Giry (Maria Mercedes), and “Beneath A Moonless Sky”, sung by Anna O’Byrne and Ben Lewis (Phantom).

Also present at the event, staged at Opera Australia in Surry Hills, were the show’s designer Gabriela Tylesova, choreographer Graeme Murphy and musical director Guy Simpson, introduced to the press by Simon Philips in front of a collection of completed costumes and design drawings.

Tylesova’s set (pictured during construction, left) still remains somewhat of a mystery and wasn’t discussed in detail although Simon Phillips did announce that the design does feature 3 revolves on the stage. The set and costume design is completely new and unique to the Australian production. Even parts of the script and structure have been reworked and modified from the original London Production.

Stay tuned for our video footage – due on AussieTheatre.com next week.
