Nicola Gunn’s APOLOGIA has its world premiere at Malthouse Theatre

APOLOGIA unpacks Nicola Gunn’s personal fantasy of being a French actress – despite being categorically not French.

In a series of surreal comedic encounters, a French actress is fired for her bad behaviour, two tourists find themselves disappointed by the city of Paris and a French translator attempts to navigate the complex relationship with her mother and her mother tongue.

APOLOGIA encompasses ambisonic sound, theatre installation, film, and literature. Armed with her signature bold and candid approach, Nicola confronts having her own voice translated by others.

An award-winning writer, director, performer and dramaturg, Nicola’s works combine theatre, choreography and visual art to explore the fragility of the human condition. Her previous works include Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster, Working With Children, In Spite of Myself and Hello My Name Is, which have been performed in Australia as well as all across Europe and the Americas. APOLOGIA is the second instalment in a trilogy of works that investigate the dramaturgy of translation and the act of interpretation, language as sound, and text as image.
