The evolution of dance from stage to the screen is continually developing, and the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) is launching a new masterclass for cinematographers, choreographers and dancers to participate in an exciting, intensive and innovative collaboration on July 28 & 29 this year.
Participants in the course will explore the aesthetics of the dance film genre of the 20th century through to contemporary screen dance practice using works of national and internationally recognised leaders in the field over two full days.
Dr Richard James Allen from Physical TV will lead the course, with participants working in the AFTRS film studio with dancers learning different scenarios and approaches to capture dance for the screen.
“We’ll explore a range of ‘shooting’ exercises in studio, looking at key concepts of time, energy, space and gesture in staging and framing. By exploring montage ideas of collision and flow, timing, pacing and trajectory phrasing, participants will learn the tremendous impact they can have in this genre”, said Dr Allen, an award winning leader in the dance film genre.
“Places are limited to ensure the very best learning environment for the masterclass and the production of high quality outcomes for each participant,” Dr Allen says.
The Dance Film Masterclass is a collaboration between AFTRS, The Physical TV Company and FORM Dance Projects, and FORM will be offering a scholarship to an emerging independent dancer or choreographer to participate in the masterclass.
