From Sydney World Pride to the State Theatre Gender Euphoria keeps it Mighty Real

A new adventure from the creators of Gender Euphoria, the acclaimed, revolutionary and ecstatic smash hit of the 2019 Melbourne International Arts Festival, arrives with Gender Euphoria: Mighty Real, showing for two nights only at Art Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre on May 19 – 20, following its glittering world premiere at Sydney World Pride.

Diva, impresario, and cabaret legend Mama Alto has again joined creative forces with maverick Maude Davey OAM and a constellation of bright-shining stars for a joyous new adventure into the fabulousness of the trans and non-binary spirit, Gender Euphoria: Mighty Real.

The work is a rich mosaic of trans lives that dares to platform trans joy, beauty, love, power and euphoria with this latest iteration bringing together the largest ensemble of entirely trans and gender diverse performers to ever feature on an Australian main stage.

Mama Alto:

We created this epic work thinking – what if we could express our trans joy, beauty and heart fully?”  “Ultimately, this work – while acknowledging there’s darkness, there’s struggle – is about our inherent human dignity and worth, no matter what gender. And our right to participate in life joyously, in all our messy, multifaceted, glorious diversity. It feels so wonderful to bring this work – which really has been a landmark, watershed moment in trans representation in the performing arts in this country – to the State Theatre stage at Arts Centre Melbourne, after our jubilant and cathartic WorldPride season.

Song, dance, poetry, burlesque and variety meld for an evening of utter fabulousness with Mama Alto belting her heart out with true gender transcendent diva panache, the stellar grand piano stylings of Ned Dixon and the musicality of Rosie Rai, Miss Bailee Rose’sexquisite dance movement, Themme Fatale’s sublime circus artistry with Nikki Viveca and Fury injecting thought-provoking poetic reckonings to the evening.

Georgie “Mx Munro” George brings her trademark sultry sound and dirty mind to bear on sex and self love whilst Amao Leota Lu delights with her Samoan tradition and contemporary pop dance infusions. Also taking to the stage is acclaimed actor Harvey Zielinski, who delivers powerful storytelling about the complexity of identity along with non-binary Australian writer and transgender rights activist Nevo Zisin, who weaves ancient wisdoms together with sharp contemporary poetics. More guest artists will be announced soon.

The State Theatre will be transformed into a vibrant cabaret lounge with seating on stage for an up close and personal tour de force. Join the euphoric celebrations as we say goodbye to gender dysphoria, and Hello! to Gender Euphoria: Mighty Real.
