Coming soon to Newcastle!

September is looking to be a fantastic month for theatre in Newcastle. There’s something for everyone; with fringe theatre, ballet and political satire all making their way onto the Newcastle stage. The opening of The Factory — a new 577 seat live theatre venue in Adamstown — as well as the emergence of new local talent, guarantees that Newcastle is no longer a forgotten destination on the arts map. Here are some September highlights for the Novocastrian theatre-goer:

Outlast

Tantrum Theatre, Newcastle’s leading theatre for young people, presents Outlast. Tantrum Theatre welcomed 2012 by presenting a series of home-grown productions that focus on what it means to be Novocastrian. With Outlast, they will be taking advantage of one of Newcastle’s most iconic and controversial public spaces, by presenting this performance in the Hunter Street Mall. Directed by Rachel Jackett in collaboration with a creative team, this innovative work explores survival, and aims to reinvent the way we view our city and our own reality.

Directed by award winning theatrical producer Don W. McEwan, the original stage adaptation of this heart-breaking story comes to Newcastle for the first time. Based on the true story of Joseph Carey Merrick, a sufferer of Proteus Syndrome during Victorian era England, the story follows his incredible journey; beginning with his enslavement in a circus freak show. The production will be staged at Newcastle’s new live venue – The Factory Adamstown; an amphitheatre style venue that enables the audience to get up-close to the action.
