Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will make its Australian debut in 2017

It was announced this morning that Beautiful: The Carole King Musical will make its Australian debut at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in September 2017.

It was also confirmed that the Sydney Lyric Theatre will undergo a transformational refurbishment that will be completed for the opening of Beautiful.

Australian Producer, Michael Cassel said: “This show is simply ‘some kind of wonderful’. I am very excited to bring this sensational show to Australian shores – Carole King might be a native New Yorker but her music is loved the world over and her story is universal. Carole King wrote the soundtrack to a generation and I can’t wait for Australian audiences to experience this smash-hit production in Sydney.”

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the story of King’s early career, featuring songs she wrote, both on her own and with Gerry Goffin, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, and Phil Spector. Hits in the show include ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’, ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’, ‘One Fine Day’, ‘The Locomotion’, ‘I Feel The Earth Move’ and more.

Beautiful debuted on Broadway in 2014, where it won two Tony Awards. It’s still running on Broadway and another company is touring the US with the show. It’s also playing on London’s West End, where it opened in 2015 and won two Olivier Awards.

Casting for the Australian production will commence later this year.

  • Interesting choice. I would have thought shows like FINDING NEVERLAND and SOMETHING ROTTEN would have had more universal appeal to an Australian audience. Wishing them well.

    • Having seen both of these products in New York last year, I am not sure they are mature enough to tour.

Both productions are fantastic in their own right but we really need to sit and wait and see before they come here.

  • Would somebody be able to enlighten me and let me know when Beautiful the musical is scheduled to hit Melbourne.

  • Would like to know is Brisbane getting a show im a fan of Carole King saw her live in Brisbane all my young kids a friends came to her concert with me absolutely loved it brilliant musician would love to see the show oh well if not have to make a trip to Sydney

  • Would also love to know if it's coming to Brisbane as I would love to see it but don't think I'll get to Sydney

  • Very interested to know if it is either coming to Brisbane or Melbourne, and if it is when and where?? Would really like to see the production but can't get to Sydney at the time it is showing.

    • Hi Sue,
Nothing has been announced at this stage. We would expect a production of this size to eventually tour to Melbourne and possible to Brisbane down the track, but we do not know that for sure. We will make sure we have something on the website as soon as there is word

  • Would love to see this in Melbourne so I can take my elderly neighbour who can't travel interstate to this production as we are both, especially my neighbour Carole King fans. I assume it will make it to Melbourne. If so, do you have any idea when this may occur?
