The Green Room Awards, initiated in 1982 by Blair Edgar and Stephen Tandy acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of artists and technicians on stage, back stage, in the grid and in the pit in seven sectors of the arts: Dance, Opera, Alternative & Hybrid Performance, Cabaret, Theatre Companies, Independent Theatre and Music Theatre.

In musical theatre, The Production Company’s Chess the musical received 12 individual nods in the nominations while A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was next on the list with 8 nominations. South Pacific, the hit musical from Tony Award winning director Bartlett Sher came away with only two nominations (leading lady Lisa McCune and Musical Director Andrew Greene), despite having swept the Tony Awards with the same production.

Opera Australia came away with the most nominations for an individual company (20) and Melbourne Theatre Company received 17 nominations for its work in 2012.

Winners of the 2012 Green Room Awards will be announced at a ceremony on the set of Driving Miss Daisy, thanks to The Marriner Group and the Gordon Frost Organisation on May 6 at the Comedy Theatre.

In addition to the nominations, a number of individual achievement awards will be made at the ceremony including the Lifetime Achievement Award.

This year’s recipient will be announced in April, ahead of the ceremony in May.
