Last night, London’s West End witnessed the glittering world premiere of ‘Stranger Things: The First Shadow’ at the Phoenix Theatre. The event saw a host of celebrities, including the Duffer Brothers, Matthew Modine, and Lily Allen, gracing the red carpet.
The Duffer Brothers, creators of the acclaimed ‘Stranger Things’ series, were present alongside Matthew Modine, who portrays Dr Brenner in the series, and Lily Allen, linked to the show through her husband David Harbour (James Hopper Jr in the series). Producer Sonia Friedman also attended. The team shared their excitement about this new venture, a stage prequel produced in collaboration with Netflix.
Set in 1959, a contrast to the original series’ 1980s setting, the play explores the earlier lives of characters like Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado, Bob Newby, and Henry Creel, familiar to fans through the portrayals of Harbour, Winona Ryder, Sean Astin, and Jamie Campbell Bower in the series.
Crafted by the Duffer Brothers, Jack Thorne, and Kate Trefry, and directed by Stephen Daldry with Justin Martin as co-director, ‘The First Shadow’ has been lauded by WhatsOnStage as a “major visual spectacle”. The West End cast features Shane Attwooll, Kemi Awoderu, and Oscar Lloyd, among others.
The production is a feast for the senses, boasting scenic design by Miriam Buether, costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel, and lighting design by Jon Clark. Sound design is by Paul Arditti, with illusions and visual effects by Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher. The musical score and arrangements are the work of D J Walde, with choreography by Coral Messam.
This new addition to the ‘Stranger Things’ universe promises to be an enthralling experience, combining the nostalgia of the original series with fresh storytelling and a dynamic cast. The show is now officially open to the public, offering a unique journey into the earlier days of its beloved characters.
