Todrick Hall’s MIDNIGHT to Make Off Broadway Debut This Fall

Todrick Hall will bring his new original musical MIDNIGHT to New York this autumn, with the production set to make its Off Broadway debut at the Daryl Roth Theatre.

Performances will begin on 12 September, ahead of an official opening night on 27 September. The limited engagement is currently scheduled to run through 1 November.

Written and directed by Hall, MIDNIGHT arrives in New York following two sold-out London runs. The production marks a major new chapter for the performer, writer, choreographer and digital creator, whose stage career has included appearances in THE COLOR PURPLE, CHICAGO, KINKY BOOTS, WAITRESS and SHREK THE MUSICAL.

Set in the 19th-century American South, MIDNIGHT follows twelve interconnected characters, six Black and six white, as their relationships force them to confront inherited social systems, personal assumptions and the boundaries created by race, class and expectation.

The musical is sung-through, with a score that draws from gospel, rhythm and blues, pop, rock, folk, opera and classic musical theatre. Its subject matter places it within a lineage of large-scale musical storytelling, using music as the driving force for character, conflict and emotional revelation.

The production has been developed over several years, with Hall beginning work on the piece around six years ago. The musical emerged from his desire to create a story that could speak to division, empathy and human connection without being confined to a single moment in time.

While MIDNIGHT is set in the past, its themes are intended to resonate with contemporary audiences. By placing characters from different backgrounds in direct emotional and moral conflict, the musical explores how people inherit beliefs, how those beliefs can be challenged, and whether understanding is possible across divides.

The Off Broadway premiere will also represent a personal milestone for Hall, who has built a wide-ranging career across stage, music, television and online media. He first rose to broad public recognition through viral videos and performance work, before expanding into theatre, concert tours, choreography, album releases and directing.

In recent years, Hall has increasingly worked behind the scenes as a creator as well as a performer. His credits include directing and choreographing BURLESQUE THE MUSICAL, as well as composing, writing and performing across multiple theatrical and music projects.

MIDNIGHT positions him as the central creative force behind a full original stage musical. In addition to writing and directing the work, Hall has shaped a production that combines his pop sensibility, theatre background and interest in stories about outsiders, identity and belonging.

The show’s London engagements helped build early momentum for the piece before its move to New York. Its transfer to the Daryl Roth Theatre gives the musical a significant Off Broadway platform and places it within one of the city’s most active theatrical landscapes for new work.

The Daryl Roth Theatre has long been associated with distinctive commercial Off Broadway productions, including intimate musicals, plays and unconventional theatrical events. MIDNIGHT’s arrival there gives the musical an opportunity to reach audiences looking for original material outside the Broadway mainstream.

The production is being produced by Midnight 1200 LLC and Caryn Sterling. Additional details, including casting, the full creative team, ticketing information and the complete performance schedule, are expected to be announced.

For now, the announcement confirms that Todrick Hall’s latest theatrical project will receive its New York premiere later this year, bringing a new sung-through musical about identity, empathy and social division to Off Broadway.
