MASQUERADE, the immersive off Broadway reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, has extended its New York run through 31 January 2027.
The production, which is playing at 218 West 57th Street, has now extended for a sixth time, continuing its strong commercial momentum as audiences embrace its unconventional approach to one of musical theatre’s most recognisable titles.
Directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, MASQUERADE offers a 360 degree theatrical experience that places audiences inside the world of the Phantom rather than in a traditional auditorium setting. The production reshapes the atmosphere, music and imagery of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA into an immersive event, allowing theatregoers to move through the story’s locations and encounter the musical from a closer and more intimate perspective.
Alongside the extension, the production has announced several new company members. Austin Colby, Derrick Davisand Nicholas Edwards will take on the role of the Phantom, with Colby scheduled to play the part through 23 July. Claire Leyden will step into the role of Christine, while Gregory Lee Rodriguez will play Raoul and Mark Banik will appear as Firmin.
The production has also confirmed Courtney Balan, Stephanie Jae Park, Stephanie Reuning-Scherer and Tanner Quirk as vacation covers.
The cast changes come as MASQUERADE continues to build its identity as one of New York’s most distinctive theatrical offerings. Rather than presenting THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA as a conventional revival, the production uses its immersive format to place audiences in the shadowy world of the Paris Opera House, drawing them closer to the masked balls, dressing rooms, hidden corridors and subterranean mystery associated with the famous story.
The show is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s original musical, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart, additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe, and book by Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Its continued extension reflects the lasting strength of the PHANTOM brand, even after the original Broadway production ended its historic run in 2023. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA remains one of the most successful and recognisable musicals in the world, and MASQUERADE has found a new way to bring the material to audiences who may know the score but are looking for a different theatrical encounter.
The immersive format also allows the production to lean into the gothic romance, theatrical spectacle and mystery that have long made PHANTOM an audience favourite. By removing some of the distance between performer and spectator, MASQUERADE invites audiences to experience the story as participants inside its world, rather than observers watching from across the footlights.
The sixth extension is a significant vote of confidence in the production’s ongoing appeal. In a crowded New York theatre market, immersive work must compete not only with Broadway and off Broadway productions, but also with concerts, themed events and experiential entertainment. MASQUERADE’s continued run suggests it has successfully positioned itself between those worlds, offering both a musical theatre experience and a destination event.
The addition of new performers will also give returning audiences a reason to revisit the production, particularly with multiple actors sharing the central role of the Phantom. The character remains one of musical theatre’s most demanding and iconic parts, requiring vocal power, theatrical command and emotional intensity.
For Christine and Raoul, the casting changes also refresh the central romantic dynamic at the heart of the story. Their relationship, complicated by the Phantom’s obsession and the opera house’s dark secrets, remains one of the musical’s defining emotional threads.
MASQUERADE’s extension through January 2027 ensures that the world of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA will continue to have a major presence in New York. While the original Broadway production is no longer playing at the Majestic Theatre, the story’s music, imagery and mythology remain very much alive only a few blocks away.
With its latest extension and new cast members, MASQUERADE continues to prove that the Phantom’s hold on audiences is far from over.
