The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Musical Begins Performances in London’s West End

The highly anticipated West End debut of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button musical begins performances today, October 10, at the Ambassadors Theatre in London. Directed by Jethro Compton, the musical is based on the classic short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald and has been adapted into a captivating stage production by Compton and composer Darren Clark.

This West End transfer follows the sold-out success of its original run at Southwark Playhouse, where it won the Best Musical Theatre Production at the Off West End Awards. The story, originally set in Baltimore, Maryland, has been reimagined for the stage, moving the setting to the north coast of Cornwall. The unique narrative revolves around Benjamin Button, a man born as an elderly baby who ages in reverse, exploring themes of time, life, and love.

Olivier Award winner John Dagleish takes on the title role of Benjamin Button, alongside Clare Foster as Elowen Keene. The ensemble cast includes Katy Ellis, Matthew Burns, Jonathan Charles, Oonagh Cox, Anna Fordham, Philippa Hogg, Damien James, Ann Marcuson, Jack Quarton, Benedict Salter, and newcomer Elliot Mackenzie. Many of the cast members are reprising their roles from the Southwark Playhouse production.

The show features an actor-musician ensemble, blending live music with dynamic performances to bring the whimsical and thought-provoking story to life. The production’s creative team includes co-music supervision, orchestration, and arrangements by Mark Aspinall and Darren Clark, choreography by Chi-San Howard, stage design by Jethro Compton, costume and associate stage design by Anna Kelsey, sound design by Luke Swaffield, lighting design by Zoe Spurr, and casting by Ginny Schiller.

Compton, who has overseen the show’s development over the last seven years, described the production as starting as a “scrappy little show with a big heart.” He expressed gratitude for the audience’s support and excitement for the next chapter of its journey in the West End.

The musical promises to offer audiences a heartfelt and visually immersive experience, with performances running at the Ambassadors Theatre for a limited time.
