Stranger Things: The First Shadow Extends West End Run Amid Continued Success

The stage prequel to the smash-hit TV series Stranger Things, titled Stranger Things: The First Shadow, has once again extended its West End run, cementing its place as a must-see theatrical event. Set in 1959, the production delves into the backstories of beloved characters like Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado, Bob Newby, and Henry Creel, offering fans a rich, immersive experience into the early days of Hawkins, Indiana.

Crafted by Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers, alongside Jack Thorne and Kate Trefry, the play features a script by Trefry and is directed by Stephen Daldry, with Justin Martin serving as co-director. The production has garnered rave reviews, with critics, including WhatsOnStage, praising its “major visual spectacle.”

The current cast includes Louis Healy as Henry Creel, Callum Maxwell as Bob Newby, Miranda Mufema as Patty Newby, Jessica Rhodes as Joyce Maldonado, and George Smale as James Hopper Jr. Joining them are seasoned actors such as Luke Mullins as Dr. Brenner and Shane Attwooll as Chief Hopper. Alternating the role of Alice Creel are Scarlett Davies, Olivia Miller, India Moon, and Pixie Robbins.

Original cast members, including Ammar Duffus and Matthew Pidgeon, continue to bring the world of Hawkins to life, while former cast member Louis McCartney is set to transfer with the show for its Broadway debut next year. McCartney’s portrayal of Henry Creel earned him a WhatsOnStage Award nomination, and the production was honored with eight nominations overall, winning Best New Play.

The show’s success owes much to its technical and artistic brilliance. Scenic design by Miriam Buether, lighting by Jon Clark, and groundbreaking illusions and visual effects by Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher, alongside 59 Productions, create a visually stunning experience. Costume design by Brigitte Reiffenstuel and original music by DJ Walde further enrich the production, while choreography by Coral Messam and movement direction by Lynne Page enhance its dynamic storytelling.

With nominations for five Olivier Awards, including Best New Play and Best Set Design, Stranger Things: The First Shadow has firmly established itself as a critical and commercial success. Its ability to expand on the lore of the Stranger Things universe while captivating audiences with high-caliber performances and technical wizardry ensures its place as a highlight of London’s West End.

As the production extends its run, anticipation grows for its Broadway transfer, promising to bring the early mysteries of Hawkins to a global audience. Fans and newcomers alike are encouraged to experience the magic while it remains in London.
