Shaftesbury Theatre to Be Renamed in Honour of Dame Judi Dench
London’s Shaftesbury Theatre will be renamed after Dame Judi Dench in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to British theatre and the performing arts.
The change, scheduled for February next year, will make the venue the first West End theatre to carry the name of an actress.
Dame Judi has a long association with the theatre. She was a founding member of the Theatre of Comedy, a company that presented productions at the Shaftesbury during the 1980s and 1990s. She later worked closely with the venue’s owners, the Taffner family, and their television and theatre production business.
That partnership continued beyond the stage. Dame Judi starred in the BBC sitcom As Time Goes By, which ran for nine series and was produced by the Taffners’ company.
The actress described the recognition as deeply moving, noting that the Shaftesbury has remained an important part of her life and career.
With a career spanning seven decades, Dame Judi is widely regarded as one of Britain’s most distinguished performers. Her work has included acclaimed roles in theatre, musical productions, television and film.
The renaming will celebrate both her wider artistic legacy and her enduring connection to one of London’s best-known theatrical venues.
