Robert Downey Jr. Set for Broadway Debut in ‘McNeal’ This Autumn

Academy Award-winning actor Robert Downey Jr. is slated to make his Broadway debut in the upcoming play ‘McNeal,’ penned by Ayad Akhtar and directed by Bartlett Sher. The production, set to be staged at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York, will run from September 5 to November 24, as announced by Lincoln Center Theater.

Born on April 4, 1965, Robert John Downey Jr. has become one of the highest-grossing actors globally, with his leading roles amassing over $14 billion worldwide. Downey’s journey through Hollywood has been marked by early successes, struggles with drug-related issues and legal troubles, followed by a resurgence of popularity and commercial triumph in the 2000s. In 2008, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and Forbes listed him as Hollywood’s highest-paid actor from 2013 to 2015.

In ‘McNeal,’ Downey Jr. will portray Jacob McNeal, a character described as a perpetual Nobel Prize in Literature contender. McNeal is a complex figure with a new novel in the works, estranged familial ties, and a peculiar obsession with Artificial Intelligence. Further casting details are expected to be released soon.

The play boasts an impressive creative team, including set design by Michael Yeargan and Jake Barton, costume design by Jennifer Moeller, lighting by Donald Holder, sound by Justin Ellington and Beth Lake, and projections also by Jake Barton. Jennifer Rae Moore will serve as the stage manager.

This announcement follows Downey Jr.’s recent Oscar win for his role in the critically acclaimed film ‘Oppenheimer.’
