‘Oliver!’ Set to Make a Comeback on the West End

The classic Dickens musical Oliver! is returning to London’s West End this Christmas after more than a decade. The musical, based on Charles Dickens’s novel “Oliver Twist,” was last staged at the London Palladium with notable actors including Rowan Atkinson as Fagin and Jodie Prenger as Nancy, cast through a talent show tie-in.

This time around, the production is transitioning from the Chichester Festival Theatre to the Gielgud Theatre. Though it won’t be accompanied by a television show as before, the revival remains significant. Comedy actor Simon Lipkin is set to portray the cunning Fagin in what promises to be a noteworthy rendition of the musical.

The revival, led by West End heavyweight producer Cameron Mackintosh, is directed and choreographed by Matthew Bourne. Mackintosh, known for only backing substantial projects, ensures that while the production may have been “fully reconceived” for its new run, it will retain all the cherished elements of Lionel Bart’s original adaptation. Fans can look forward to classic hits such as ‘Food Glorious Food,’ ‘Consider Yourself,’ and ‘As Long As He Needs Me.’

The show will preview this summer in Chichester for those eager to catch it early, before making its way to London for the year-end festivities.
