New Cast Revealed for West End’s Tina – The Tina Turner Musical
The beloved Tina Turner Musical ‘Tina’ in London’s West End is set for a captivating new era as it unveils its latest lineup of talent, lending fresh resonance to the play amidst the poignant passing of the iconic singer herself, Tina Turner.
The Tina Turner Musical, officially titled “Tina – The Tina Turner Musical,” is a jukebox musical that delves into the life and career of the legendary rock ‘n’ roll singer, Tina Turner.
The narrative traverses her humble beginnings in Nutbush, Tennessee, to her transformation into the global Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The musical is a biographical journey that traces her struggles and victories, focusing on personal and professional trials and triumphs. It encapsulates her tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner, her fight for independence, and her eventual, triumphant rise to stardom.
Songs from Turner’s catalog, including “River Deep Mountain High,” “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” “Proud Mary,” “Private Dancer,” and many others, drive the narrative of the musical. The musical captures the spirit of Tina Turner, giving audiences a glimpse of the strength, resilience, and talent that defined her career.
From overcoming adversity and personal hardship to achieving international acclaim, the story of Tina Turner is one of resilience and rebirth, showing that it’s possible to break free from the past and redefine oneself, even in the face of immense challenges.
Beginning June 8, the lead role of Tina will be reenergized through a remarkable duo of performers. Karis Anderson, hitherto a standout member of the ensemble, is poised to share this commanding role with the acclaimed Elesha Paul Moses, who continues her triumphant portrayal of the global superstar.
The celebrated Okezie Morro, revered for his role in ‘Moon on a Rainbow Shawl’, will be stepping into the spotlight to bring Ike Turner’s character to life.
Adding a new dimension to the ensemble, Mark Anderson is set to take on the dual roles of illustrious record producer Phil Spector and the masterful lyricist Terry Britten. Meanwhile, Jonathan Carlton is on deck to capture the driven Erwin Bach, the ingenious record company marketing manager.
Providing depth to the show’s familial narrative, ensemble veteran Vanessa Dumatey will step into the shoes of Tina’s sister, Alline Bullock. Irene Myrtle Forrester, as the steadfast matriarch, will continue to delight audiences as Tina’s grandmother.
Joining the cast, Earl Gregory will portray Tina’s father Richard Bullock, and Harry Harrington will assume the role of Tina’s manager Roger Davies. Emma Hatton will add further complexity to the narrative by playing Ike and Tina’s manager, Rhonda Graam. Jarius McClanahan will portray Tina’s first love Raymond Hill, and Carole Stennett will join the cast as Tina’s mother, Zelma.
The ensemble will be reinforced by Lauren Allan, Turrell Barrett-Wallace, Joey James, and Thomas Sutcliffe. They will be playing an assortment of pivotal roles, including those of Tina’s children and her backup singer Toni.
The Ikettes will be brought to life by the dynamic trio of Morgan Broome, Amara Campbell, and Abiola Efunshile. The all-important swings will be portrayed by a talented roster of performers, promising to keep audiences entertained.
In a touching tribute to Tina Turner’s early life, the cast will feature a talented group of children, including Shaniyah Abrahams, Seikemi Okotore, Shyanne Ononiwu, Eden Butcher, Adisa Richards, Ezmai Robinson, AJ Aboiralor, Ayden Beale, and Philip Kamau.
This riveting production, under the able direction of Phyllida Lloyd, is a kaleidoscope of talent. The play, a testament to the genius of Katori Hall, Frank Ketelaar, and Kees Prins, boasts of an artistic ensemble that includes choreographer Anthony van Laast, set and costume designer Mark Thompson, musical supervisor Nicholas Skilbeck, lighting designer Bruno Poet, sound designer Nevin Steinberg, and projection designer Jeff Sugg.
