Merrily We Roll Along Tops Billboard’s Cast Albums Chart with Star-Studded Cast

The Broadway landscape witnessed a new chart-topping entry as the cast recording of ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Cast Albums chart, dated November 25. This feat is bolstered by a stellar cast featuring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez, each with a history of appearing on top-charting cast albums.

The acclaimed musical, showcasing music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by George Furth, is based on the play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. The 2023 production marks the first Broadway revival of the musical since its original 1981 debut. The show began its journey off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2022 with the same principal cast and transitioned to Broadway’s Hudson Theatre in September 2023.

Jonathan Groff, a notable name in Broadway, has now featured in three No. 1 titles on the Billboard’s Cast Albums chart, including ‘Merrily We Roll Along,’ ‘Hamilton: An American Musical,’ and ‘Spring Awakening.’ His accolades include a Grammy Award for ‘Hamilton’ and multiple top 10-charting albums like ‘A New Brain’ and ‘Little Shop of Horrors.’

Daniel Radcliffe, renowned for his diverse roles, adds another achievement with this recording. He previously starred in the 2011 Broadway revival of ‘How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying,’ with its cast recording reaching No. 2. His role in this production also earned him a Grammy nomination.

Lindsay Mendez, with an impressive Broadway portfolio, has appeared in five top 10-charting sets on the Cast Albums chart, including ‘Grease,’ ‘Everyday Rapture,’ ‘Dogfight,’ ‘Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel,’ and ‘Godspell.’ Her performance in ‘Carousel’ also garnered a Grammy nomination.

Billboard’s Top Cast Albums chart, which ranks the top-selling musical cast recordings in the U.S., is based on traditional album sales and tracked by Luminate. The chart’s latest update reflects sales for the week ending November 16. ‘Merrily We Roll Along,’ with its strong cast and critical acclaim, promises to be a memorable addition to Broadway’s rich history.
