NEW YORK, Meg Donnelly is settling into Broadway life as she makes her stage debut in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, balancing the physical demands of the show with the pleasures of being back in the city where her theatre ambitions began.
The 25 year old performer, known to many audiences from Disney’s Zombies franchise, recently marked the end of a demanding two show Sunday by indulging in comfort food from a local bodega, a choice many singers typically avoid during performance weeks. With Mondays free from scheduled shows, she had time to rest and recover before returning to the stage.
Although Broadway is new territory for Donnelly, New York is not. Born in the city and raised in northern New Jersey, she spent much of her childhood around Manhattan and developed an early love for theatre. Now based in Los Angeles, where her partner Drake Rodger is caring for her two cats, Donnelly says returning to New York to perform on Broadway feels like a full circle moment.
Her Broadway debut follows years of auditions and rejection, an experience she has spoken about as both difficult and formative. Performing eight shows a week, she says, has become a source of confidence, reinforcing her belief in her own resilience and ability to meet the demands of live theatre.
In Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Donnelly plays Satine, a celebrated cabaret performer who continues to take the stage despite suffering from tuberculosis. The musical is adapted from the 2001 film, which received eight Academy Award nominations including best picture, and tells the story of Satine’s romance with Christian, an aspiring songwriter.
Donnelly has found particular satisfaction in exploring Satine’s emotional arc, noting the contrast between the lighter tone of the first act and the darker, more dramatic second half. She approaches the role with an emphasis on Satine’s pride and determination to conceal her illness, finding new nuances in the character’s inner conflict each night.
As a jukebox musical, Moulin Rouge! draws on a wide range of popular songs, often blending multiple tracks into a single number. One of the most demanding sequences is the “Elephant Love Medley,” which combines more than a dozen songs including “Everlasting Love,” “Torn,” and “Your Song,” and requires sustained vocal and emotional intensity.
Now immersed in the rhythm of Broadway performances, Donnelly is embracing both the challenges and the rewards of live theatre. From the exhaustion of back to back shows to the excitement of nightly curtain calls, her Broadway debut marks a milestone shaped by persistence, growth, and a long held love of the stage.
