Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to return to Broadway in spring 2027 with a new musical adaptation of THE WARRIORS, marking his first Broadway production since the global success of HAMILTON.
The new musical, developed with playwright and actress Eisa Davis, is scheduled to arrive at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in April 2027. The production reimagines the 1979 cult film through a gender-flipped lens, bringing a new perspective to one of New York City’s most recognisable urban stories.
THE WARRIORS follows a street gang attempting to make its way back to Coney Island after being wrongly blamed for the killing of a gang leader during a major summit in the Bronx. Their journey across the city becomes a dangerous fight for survival as rival groups close in.
The story has a long literary and cultural history. It began with Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel THE WARRIORS, which itself drew inspiration from the ancient Greek tale Anabasis. The 1979 film adaptation later cemented the title’s cult status, becoming a gritty and stylised portrait of New York City nightlife, gang mythology and urban survival.
For the stage version, Miranda and Davis have written the music, lyrics and book. Miranda will also serve as one of the production’s lead producers, though he is not expected to perform in the show.
The project is likely to attract significant attention, not only because of Miranda’s long-awaited Broadway return, but also because of the creative pairing with Davis and the decision to reframe the story through a gender-flipped approach.
Since HAMILTON, Miranda has remained one of the most influential figures in contemporary musical theatre, with work spanning stage, film, television and music. His return to Broadway with a new original stage project will be closely watched by the industry, particularly as THE WARRIORS brings together a famous New York story, a cult screen legacy and a new theatrical interpretation.
The production is expected to open at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in April 2027.
