Jonathan Bailey has shared that he recorded a self tape for Wicked during his run in Cock at the Ambassadors Theatre, squeezing the audition into the show’s five minute call.
Speaking during the special event Wicked: One Wonderful Night, which airs in the UK tomorrow, Bailey recalled setting up his phone on the dressing room table and singing a karaoke version of Dancing Through Life straight to camera. The clip captures the theatre’s five minute call over the tannoy, a reminder of how close the taping came to curtain up. Footage of the audition is included in the special.
Bailey’s performance in Cock earned him a WhatsOnStage Award nomination. The 2022 revival, staged in spring at the Ambassadors Theatre, played to strong reviews and sell out audiences.
The revelation offers a glimpse into the realities of auditioning while in performance, with Bailey balancing a buzzy West End run and a high profile casting process that would go on to make headlines.
