Hillary Clinton Receives Standing Ovation at 2024 Tony Awards

Hillary Clinton, a co-producer of the Broadway musical Suffs, received a standing ovation as she presented at the 2024 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 16. The event took place at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City.

Clinton, 76, introduced Suffs, a musical by Shaina Taub that received six nominations at the 77th Tony Awards. In her speech, she highlighted the historical significance of the production, which focuses on the suffragists who fought for women’s right to vote.

“What a great evening. Now, I have stood on a lot of stages, but this is very special. And I know a little bit about how hard it is to make change, so I’m extremely proud of this original American musical by Shaina Taub — now a two-time Tony winner,” Clinton said, addressing the audience. She emphasized the importance of voting and the ongoing struggle for equality, especially in an election year.

Suffs received nominations for Best Musical, competing against Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, The Outsiders, and Water for Elephants. Taub, 36, won awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. The musical, set in 1913, chronicles the efforts of suffragists to secure the right to vote for American women, a right granted with the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920.

Clinton is listed as a co-producer on Suffs alongside Malala Yousafzai, Jill Furman, and Rachel Sussman. The official synopsis describes the musical as a portrayal of brilliant, flawed women who overcame generational, racial, and class divides to achieve a hard-won victory, inspiring contemporary audiences with their story.

The 2024 Tony Awards, hosted at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater, were broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+.
