Daniel Radcliffe Wins First Major Acting Prize at Tony Awards

In a night filled with first-time winners, Daniel Radcliffe emerged victorious at the 77th annual Tony Awards, winning his first major acting award. The beloved Harry Potter star clinched the Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his performance in Merrily We Roll Along.

Radcliffe, visibly moved, expressed his gratitude, saying, “This has been one of the best experiences of my life.” The 34-year-old actor praised his co-stars, Lindsay Mendez and Jonathan Groff, describing it as an “honor” to share the stage with them in the musical, which explores the complex relationship between three lifelong friends.

In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Radcliffe thanked the late Stephen Sondheim for creating the show, saying it was “a gift to get to sing every night.” He expressed his deep connection with his co-stars, adding, “I don’t really have to act in this show; I just have to look at you and I feel everything. I will never have it this good again.”

Radcliffe also took a moment to acknowledge his family, wishing a happy Father’s Day to his parents in the audience and declaring his love for his partner, Erin Darke. “My love Erin, you and our son are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Thank you so much,” he said.

The star-studded ceremony, hosted for the third time by Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose, took place at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theatre in New York City. Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Nick Jonas, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Hudson, Idina Menzel, and Cynthia Erivo graced the event. In a surprise performance, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z joined the cast of Keys’s semi-autobiographical musical Hell’s Kitchen to perform their 2009 hit “Empire State of Mind” in tribute to New York. “I had to do something crazy; this is my hometown,” said Keys.

The evening saw a host of first-time winners, including Succession’s Jeremy Strong, who won Best Actor in a Play for his role in An Enemy of the People. Strong, portraying a doctor fighting against corruption, described the play as “a cry from the heart and an exhortation to face up to the difficult truths that are staring us all down right now.”

Radcliffe’s co-star, Jonathan Groff, also celebrated his first Tony win, taking home Best Actor in a Musical. In his speech, Groff called Radcliffe and Mendez “more than old friends, you’re soul mates,” and thanked British director Maria Friedman for her guidance.

The 77th Tony Awards will be remembered not only for the achievements of seasoned performers but also for the fresh wave of talent making their mark on Broadway’s illustrious stage.
