Warner Bros has graced audiences with a tantalising glimpse into the highly anticipated film adaptation of the acclaimed musical, ‘The Color Purple’. Leading the distinguished ensemble is Fantasia Barrino, embodying the role of Celie—a role she ardently carried from the Broadway premiere in 2007 to the US national tour in 2010. Joining her is the Tony-nominated Danielle Brooks, reprising her compelling portrayal of Sofia from the 2015 Broadway revival.
The illustrious cast further includes Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colam Domingo as Albert “Mister” Johnson, H.E.R. as Mary “Squeak” Agnes, and many more celebrated talents. This ensemble brings to life the poignant journey of Celie, a young Black woman navigating love, loss, and longing in rural Georgia. The narrative intricately unfolds her turbulent relationship with her sister, a forced marriage to an older man, and a deep connection with Shug Avery—all within the riveting first act.
Rooted in Alice Walker’s transformative 1982 novel, the musical iteration made its groundbreaking debut on Broadway in 2005, under the brilliant collaboration of Marsha Norman, Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray. This new adaptation pays homage to its roots while integrating the unique vision of screenwriter Marcus Gardley and director Blitz Bazawule.
