Drama League nominations announced

Get ready for an exhilarating celebration of theatrical talent as the nominations for the 2023 Drama League Awards have been unveiled! Recognizing the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway, the nominees were announced by Justin Guarini and Tony Award winner Roger Bart at the New York Library for the Performing Arts. Mark your calendars for the 89th annual awards ceremony, taking place on May 19 at the glamorous Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The Drama League is a non-profit organisation devoted to the growth and support of American theatre artists and the enrichment of the theatre community. Established in 1916, the Drama League is one of the oldest theatre organisations in the United States, with a rich history of promoting the development and appreciation of theatre as an art form.

The organisation offers various programmes and initiatives aimed at fostering the development of emerging theatre artists, providing resources for established professionals, and enhancing the experience of theatre-goers. Some of the Drama League’s key programmes include the Drama League Awards, the Director’s Project, and the Resident Artist Programme.

The Drama League Awards, held annually since 1922, recognise outstanding achievements in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, celebrating the accomplishments of directors, performers, and productions. These prestigious awards are unique in that they are determined by the votes of both industry professionals and theatre enthusiasts, reflecting the opinions of the broader theatre community.

This year, an impressive 29 Broadway productions from the 2022-2023 season garnered at least one nomination, while 20 standout shows received multiple accolades. Leading the pack are the sensational productions of New York, New York, Sweeney Todd, A Doll’s House, Cost of Living, Into the Woods, and Topdog/Underdog, each earning a remarkable four nominations.

Adding to the excitement, the 2023 special honorees have been announced, which include Tony winner André De Shields, Lear deBessonet, the iconic Drama Book Shop, and Darin Oduyoye.
