Broadway Welcomes Tammy Faye Musical for 2024-25 Season

The Broadway stage is set to welcome the acclaimed musical ‘Tammy Faye’ in the 2024-25 season, marking another milestone in the enduring legacy of Elton John’s music. Although the iconic songwriter is no longer touring, his musical genius continues to resonate through theatrical masterpieces like ‘Tammy Faye’. This original musical, penned by award-winning writer James Graham and featuring lyrics by Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, will premiere at one of Broadway’s prestigious Nederlander theaters.

The show, directed by Tony Award nominee Rupert Goold, delves into the compelling story of Tammy Faye Messner (formerly Bakker) and her quest to revolutionize evangelism. Alongside her ex-husband, Jim Bakker, Tammy Faye was at the forefront of the Praise the Lord (PTL) network’s TV ministry during the ’70s and ’80s. Their story took a dramatic turn when Jim was convicted of fraud, an event that significantly impacted their lives and ministry.

‘Tammy Faye’ had its world premiere in fall 2022 at London’s Almeida Theatre, where it received rave reviews and was nominated for four Olivier Awards, including Best Musical. Tony nominee Andrew Rannells, known for his current role in Broadway’s ‘Gutenberg! The Musical!’, shone in the West End as Jim Bakker, contributing to the show’s critical acclaim.

The production boasts a range of talents in its creative team. Choreography is led by Lynne Page, with orchestrations by Tom Deering and Mark Dickman. Deering also provides music supervision, arrangements, and additional music. The visual and auditory spectacle of the show is crafted through scenic design by Bunny Christie, costume design by Katrina Lindsay, lighting by Neil Austin, sound design by Bobby Aitken, and video design by Finn Ross.

After its successful run in London, where it won Best Actress in a Musical for Katie Brayben and Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for Zubin Varla at the Olivier Awards, ‘Tammy Faye’ is poised to captivate Broadway audiences. The announcement of venue, dates, and casting is highly anticipated, promising a theatrical experience that merges compelling narrative with musical brilliance. This Broadway transfer, produced by Rocket Stage, Greene Light Stage, and James L Nederlander, signifies ‘Tammy Faye’s’ rising prominence in the world of musical theatre.
