Britney Spears Broadway musical Once Upon A One More Time to close on Broadway

The musical, ‘Once Upon A One More Time’, featuring a soundtrack of Britney Spears’ hits, will be drawing its curtains on Broadway after a three-month run. Its final act will be staged at the Marquis Theatre on 3rd September, having officially started on 22nd June. The show had initiated its previews in mid-May.

Sanctioned by Spears herself, the early concept of the musical was influenced by her suggestions. After ending her 13-year conservatorship, Spears was amongst the first to sign an agreement giving rights to this musical. In recent times, the musical faced challenges with occupancy, often hovering around 50% over the past several weeks.

For the week concluding on 13th August, ticket sales plummeted to its lowest since its inception, raking in only $512,008.

Despite its short Broadway stint, there are aspirations to take the musical worldwide. Show producers, James. L Nederlander and Hunter Arnold, have hinted at both national and international adaptations in the pipeline. The duo expressed their admiration for the show and the talented team behind it and anticipate sharing more updates soon.

Audiences can expect renditions of 23 of Spears’ iconic tracks, such as ‘Toxic’, ‘Crazy’, and ‘Oops!… I Did It Again’. The narrative centres around well-known fairy princesses in a book club, whose usual reading of Grimm tales is disrupted by the introduction of Betty Friedan’s ‘The Feminine Mystique’, sent by their fairy godmother. Among these princesses are familiar faces like Cinderella and Snow White.

Initially disclosed in 2019, the musical’s inception was during the height of Spears’ conservatorship drama. Jon Hartmere, the playwright, shared how the storyline touches upon Cinderella’s existential questions and a deeper delve into modern feminist concepts, all while ensuring a humorous and entertaining experience for viewers.
