LUZIA by Cirque du Soleil Is A Mesmerising Journey Through Mexico’s Magic Premieres in Brisbane
Last night, Cirque du Soleil dazzled Brisbane with the breathtaking premiere of LUZIA under the iconic Big Top near the Royal Queensland Golf Club. Let me tell you—it was nothing short of spectacular! If you’ve ever been captivated by Cirque du Soleil’s signature blend of mind-bending acrobatics and artistic wonder, LUZIA takes it to an entirely new level.
Celebrating 25 years in Australia, LUZIA transports you to an imaginary Mexico, a dreamlike world where light (“luz”) and rain (“lluvia”) become more than elements—they’re part of the narrative. Directed by the visionary Daniele Finzi Pasca, LUZIA is a visual feast of vibrant colours, stunning sets, and jaw-dropping acts that left the Brisbane crowd cheering at every turn.
One of the most unique aspects of LUZIA is the seamless integration of water into the performances. Yes, you read that right—rain on stage! It was surreal watching acrobats perform in downpours without missing a beat. The Cyr Wheel act, where performers spin effortlessly under a curtain of rain, was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s the first time Cirque has incorporated water into one of their touring productions, and the effect is nothing short of magical.
For fans of high-flying action, the aerialist’s trapeze routine, soaring through showers of water, was a heart-stopping highlight. And if you love a bit of speed and daring, the hoop diving act was taken to new heights—literally—using gigantic treadmills to launch performers into dizzying, high-speed flips and spins.
But it wasn’t just the grand-scale acts that stole the show. The male contortionist defied the limits of the human body with his almost impossible twists and bends, while a juggler handled seven pins at breakneck speed, his precision and timing blowing us all away. And to top it off, two football freestylers mixed street dance with mind-blowing ball tricks, a celebration of Mexico’s love for football that had everyone clapping along.
Special shoutout to Queensland’s own Helena Merten, who shone on stage, making the local crowd extra proud.
The whole night felt like stepping into another world—smoothly moving between an old Mexican movie set, a vibrant ocean, a smoky dance hall, and even a desert. Each set piece was more vibrant and fantastical than the last, showcasing the richness of Mexican culture while mixing tradition with modern elements.
Fun fact: The Big Top, where LUZIA comes to life, is a marvel in itself. It took a team eight days to set up, and it holds over 2,500 people. Its towering 25-meter masts make it a sight to behold, and the eco-friendly design helps reduce energy consumption by reflecting the sun’s heat. The entire setup is as impressive as the show itself!
As Brisbane gets its special taste of LUZIA, it’s clear why more than 4.5 million people around the world have already been captivated by this production. The show is a stunning reminder of why Cirque du Soleil continues to reign as the king of acrobatic entertainment.
Whether you’re a long-time fan or a Cirque newbie, LUZIA is a must-see. The combination of surreal visuals, gravity-defying performances, and a magical storyline will leave you mesmerized from start to finish. Trust me, you don’t want to miss it!
