Balancing Art and Science: An Exclusive Interview with Shewit Belay, the Newest Star of Wicked
Shewit Belay isn’t just any actor; she’s a medical doctor, a singer, a writer, and a rising star in the world of theatre. From her versatile roles in Hamilton to her latest venture as Nessarose in WICKED, she seems to effortlessly juggle a demanding dual career, while continuously honing her craft. We sat down with Shewit to gain some insights into her life, her process, and her approach to her role in WICKED.
Art and Medicine: An Unconventional Balance
When asked about managing her artistic pursuits alongside her medical practice, Shewit explains, “Since completing my internship, I’ve been able to work as a ‘locum’ doctor. This means that I am registered with an agency that finds work for me wherever I’m touring with shows. It’s a bit of an unconventional arrangement, but it works and most importantly – it’s sustainable and very manageable.”
Shewit is quick to acknowledge the role her support network plays in her ability to juggle two careers. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without my family and friends that are constantly encouraging me. I feel so blessed to be able to pursue both careers simultaneously.”
From Hamilton to WICKED: A Rewarding Transition
Shewit found transitioning from Hamilton, where she covered various roles, to WICKED to be an enlightening experience. “Being part of a company from day one presents its own challenges and advantages. I’m learning a lot about my own process in the rehearsal room and what my approach is to implementing notes and feedback at the scaffolding stages of a show.”
She added, “Not relying on singing as my primary form of expression in Wicked has been challenging but very rewarding.”
R&B, Funk, Soul, and Musical Theatre: A Harmonious Blend
Shewit’s love for R&B, funk, and soul significantly influences her approach to musical theatre. “These genres that I grew up listening to are my vocal home. The balance between the contemporary and theatre styles really depends on the music of the show and the style it needs,” she shares.
“Wicked has a very specific sound, so I probably rely less on my R&B tendencies except when I’m belting – which is where I feel a more contemporary style helps with a fuller sound,” she adds.
Preparing for Nessarose: A Process of Connection and Understanding
For Shewit, preparing for her role as Nessarose is not only about understanding the character’s intricacies but also about exploring the dynamics of complex human relationships. “Nessarose experiences the full range of human emotion from joy to jealousy,” she reveals.
Drawing from her relationship with her own older sister, Shewit can relate to the bond between Nessarose and her sister Elphaba. She elaborates, “I know how complex sibling relationships can be, but also how important they are to navigating life.”
Shewit credits her understanding of Nessa to the insights of Lisa LeGuillou and other Nessas in Wicked companies around the world.
With such a rich understanding of her character, a passion for the arts, and a rigorous professional background, audiences can expect a captivating performance from Shewit Belay as Nessarose in WICKED. It’s clear that her combination of artistic talent and scientific discipline will continue to serve her well on stage and beyond.
