A Night at the Opera: Samantha Clarke on Breathing Life into Mozart’s Fiordiligi

When Opera Queensland presents its final instalment of the Mozart – Da Ponte trilogy, “Così fan tutte”, at the QPAC Playhouse this August, one of the main attractions will be leading Australian singer, Samantha Clarke. Having performed in acclaimed seasons in London, Clarke returns to Australia to play Fiordiligi, one of the young lovers in this audacious opera. Her character, described in Clarke’s own words as “naïve, steadfast, and empathetic”, is destined to resonate with audiences through Clarke’s skillful delivery and her keen understanding of the character’s arc.

Born and bred in Australia, Clarke recalls the moment she fell in love with opera. “When I first heard Dawn Upshaw singing ‘Angels ever bright and fair’ from Theodora”, she says, “what really stuck out to me was how much of a singing actress she was. Opera requires that you have the control of your voice to truly be a vehicle for the music and ultimately move people. I liked that challenge.” From that point on, Clarke dedicated herself to honing her craft, taking her to some of the most prestigious stages around the world.

Clarke’s portrayal of Fiordiligi in “Così fan tutte” will be her fourth, and she remains as passionate about the role as ever. “Fiordiligi has such a huge arc throughout the whole piece,” she says, “and it’s always amazing playing with that, as well as the beautiful music that Mozart has written for her.”

Her character development strategy is as studious as it is intuitive. “Every time you do it in a new production, you discover new things. When I first learnt the role, I worked on the recitative a lot which is where a lot of the action and a lot of the character is and then finessing the music and how you approach it vocally.”

The richly emotive score that Mozart has composed for this opera is a marvel in itself. Clarke explains, “I love how clever Mozart is with the vocal lines of the characters and how he almost aligns the lovers musically. Fiordiligi and Ferrando have very similar melodic lines in the ensembles and a lot of their music mirrors each other. They are both deeply felt, and I think Mozart sets that up beautifully.”

Opera Queensland’s “Così fan tutte” is set in a luxurious 21st Century resort in Italy where the young lovers are holidaying. If given the opportunity to choose a Mediterranean location for herself, Samantha Clarke jokingly opts for Greece because of her love for Greek food, though she confesses she’d happily live in a luxurious European villa anywhere in the Med.

But why should people flock to see this opera? Clarke believes there’s something in the show for everyone. “This is, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful music in the operatic repertoire that Mozart ever wrote. The story is funny, challenging, moving, reflective and human.”

This production also promises a fresh take on the classical opera. Clarke explains, “This production is going to be fabulous, and the cast is awesome. We are working hard to make sense of this and embrace it with a modern perspective. Let yourself be taken on a journey!”

As for her pre-show rituals, Clarke admits to not having a set routine. “I love doing Pilates on the day of a show to be physically warmed up. Obviously, a vocal warm-up, drinking lots of water, Yogi throat tea and pineapple! I try not to get into a set ritual!”

So, with anticipation mounting for the August performances, it’s clear that Samantha Clarke’s portrayal of Fiordiligi will be a vibrant testament to her love for the craft, her deep understanding of her character, and her infectious passion for opera. Make sure you have your tickets booked to witness this mesmerising performance, as it is an event that’s not to be missed.
