A Quick Chat With Lou Sanz

Lou Sanz

Melbourne based writer and comedian Lou Sanz is currently presenting her show Neverending Storage at Matchbox @ The Factory Theatre, Marrickville for 5 nights only as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival.

Hailed as her most punchy, entertaining and sophisticated work to date, Neverending Storage is a show about love and junk – born out of a failed relationship, six years abroad, ten thousand dollars in rent, and her life in a storage unit (approximately ten cubic feet of it)

Sanz is an award winning comedian (Moosehead, Most Promising Debut – MICF and The Age Critics award) and we caught up with her to have a quick chat…

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A neurologist. For no other reason then I was told by someone only 2 other women in Australia were neurologists and I thought I could just walk that in. When I dropped all my science subjects at 14 I realized I’d set myself up for a challenge.

Who is the most important person in the world to you?
There’s no one person; what an arrogant assumption. My family and those friends that have supported me long and short term are the most important people to me. I wouldn’t exist without the village that surrounds me.

What animal best represents you and why?
Apparently, according to the man in my kitchen; a lemur. I’m small in stature and has eyes. That’s all the information he’s giving me.

If you were a contestant on Deal or No Deal, how much would you need to be on offer before you walked away?
$20.

What was the first piece of theatre/film/TV you ever appeared in and how old were you?
Double Dare, 8 years old 1987.

Windows or MAC?
MAC…except when a job with Windows pays me.

Favourite food?
Olives

Who is the actor you would most like to work alongside?
Toby Truslove

What five songs would be the first you put a mix tape?
Anything by Jessica Simpson, “Pregnant” by R Kelly, Footrot Flats, the theme to the Neverending Story and “Kissing the Lipless” by the Shins.

What is the best thing about theatre in Australia?
We make it; regardless of the endless obstacles put before us.

What’s the worst thing about theatre in Australia?
The people that make it often, not always, don’t believe in it enough. But then again, neither do half our audiences.

Name one moment when you looked around, breathed happily and felt content.
When I answered this question.

Where is the most interesting place you have traveled?
Milwaukee, USA

Who is the most famous person you’ve ever met?
Refer to question to 8.

Most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
I got stuck in the stage and had to be lifted out by the two MCs. In my defense, I was wearing heels that got caught in the wood slats and had to crawl on stage because my skirt was too shirt.
