Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell to Bring Much Ado About Nothing to Broadway

Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell are set to reprise their acclaimed performances in Much Ado About Nothing on Broadway later this year, transferring Jamie Lloyd’s celebrated West End production to New York for a limited 10 week run.

The Shakespeare comedy, directed by Lloyd, drew widespread praise during its London engagement and earned multiple award nominations. The production received four nominations at the Standard Theatre Awards, including recognition for Lloyd’s direction and leading performance nominations for both Hiddleston and Atwell. It was also recently shortlisted for four Critics’ Circle Awards, further cementing its critical success.

Hiddleston returns to the role of Benedick, a character he has long expressed an affinity for, opposite Atwell’s Beatrice. The pairing was widely lauded in London for its dynamic interplay and contemporary energy. Lloyd’s staging infused the classic text with music, movement and a heightened romantic sensibility, creating a vibrant interpretation that resonated with modern audiences while preserving the heart of Shakespeare’s language.

The production marks another collaboration between Hiddleston and Lloyd. The pair previously worked together on Betrayal, Harold Pinter’s drama that premiered in London before transferring to Broadway in 2019. That production went on to receive four Tony Award nominations, including a nod for Hiddleston’s performance.

For Atwell, the Broadway transfer represents a significant milestone. The actor, known internationally for her work in film and television including the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will make her Broadway debut with the production. Her portrayal of Beatrice in the West End was praised for its wit, emotional depth and sharp comic timing.

Lloyd, whose recent stage credits include high profile revivals of Sunset Boulevard and Evita, has described the creative partnership with Hiddleston and Atwell as particularly electric. The Broadway staging aims to preserve the chemistry that defined the London run while introducing the production to new audiences.

The play itself remains one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, centring on the verbal sparring and reluctant romance between Benedick and Beatrice, set against a backdrop of deception, misunderstandings and eventual reconciliation. Lloyd’s interpretation places the romantic poetry and comedic warmth at the forefront, supported by a contemporary theatrical aesthetic.

The Broadway engagement will run for 10 weeks this fall, with venue and specific dates to be announced. With two internationally recognised screen stars returning to the New York stage under Lloyd’s direction, the transfer is poised to be one of the most anticipated Shakespeare productions of the season.
