How To Make Snow

This time every, it’s the same old christmas movies and cartoon re-runs on TV. But this year, the spirit of Christmas is renewed with a new home grown stage show presented by the little red company & St Laurence’s College.

How to Make Snow is an Australian Christmas musical that really touches the heart and delights the senses with it’s star studded lead cast and large ensemble of  young (and talented) performers, which altogether created a visual spectacular with well choreographed group numbers and some nice choral work. There’s also a touch of magic as they manage to make it snow in the theatre!

Upon entering the new Edmund Rice Performing Arts Centre in South Bank for the first time, I marvelled at the well equipment theatre and hope this lovely venue will be utilised well by Brisbane (and out of town) theatre producers.

The storyline follows the fantastical adventure of a boy (Marco Ghikas) as he tries to fulfil a Christmas wish – to make it snow. Marco, who plays the role of young Otis is very confident and professional in his role. Brisbane theatre favourite Bryan Probets plays Otis’ grandfather with his usual flair for comedy and telling a great story. Singing star Luke Kennedy is also joined with the beautiful soprano Mirusia Louwerse to round out an enviable lead cast.

Production values were high with a great live band under the direction of Luke Kennedy and Michael Manikus, and joined by the talents of set and costume designer Josh McIntosh and lighting designer Jason Glenwright.

Daniel Evans and Naomi Price did a wonderful job on getting this heart warming new work to the stage and it is a shame that How to Make Snow has a limited season with only four shows. However, it does feel like a show that could perhaps make a return next year to delight a larger audience.
